Inspiration

In order to gain inspiration for the ‘The Tiger That Came To Tea’ interactive app, I thought it would be a good idea to look into a variety of existing children’s graphic design and also actual drawings that children produced themselves. I will also observe other current children’s apps that apply to the current generation of children gaining an idea of layout and colour.

Here are several pictures I found whilst searching the internet that inspired me to create my own designs and potentially more down the line –

Menu layout Inspiration:

The first thing that cause my eye on this menu layout was the bright colours that really stand out and catch your eye. Colours are always appealing to children as they have a friendly feel and children do not feel intimidated like they would if the colours were dark and dull. I Also like how the menu uses the combination of both text with imagery supporting it, for example the music title has musical notes behind it which signifies that if you click on this it will be something to do with music, which gives the menu more characteristics and makes it feel more exciting. Also the structure of the menu has titles positioned in random places which makes the theme more wacky and exciting and less structured.

In this application, it is not so much a menu but the design could be used in order the create a menu. Unlike the previous example, this example is more structured and neat however still gives off the child like feel that kids relate to. The use of images along with a title works very well, as kids relate more to images and pictures rather than words and text. The use of colours are very different and clearly show that each square is for something different.

Again, this is not necessarily a menu page however it can be used for one. I like the use of the square icons to show separate links to other pages without any text, but maybe an image could be used that would easily be identifiable without the use of text that children would click on knowing what it was.

This is a more traditional menu, even though it has a list of options strictly using text, it is very clear to see the different buttons due to the contrasting colours of yellow and red with the images in the background. This does not take the main focus away from the main purpose on the page, however maybe including some images within the buttons would be more appealing to kids?

Children’s Drawings Potential Inspiration:

As I do not want to take away the magic of the original book and story, I will still be using the original images in the book ensuring they get all the references and credit. But In terms of the opening page and menu and buttons to click on within the app, I wanted to look at how children present their artwork, I wanted to see if most children draw the same and what different types of drawings are out there done by kids.

Whilst doing my research I found that childrens artwork is all very similar depending on what art material they use. I this can, The Tiger That Came To Tea book uses colouring pencil throughout the book and is drawn by hand. A lot of kids artwork using colouring pencils consist of many lines and strokes going in different directions which I could potentially use when creating the background for the text on the menus or the buttons to back and forward or any other aspects that I may come up with during the process.

Colour Inspiration:

The colour inspiration is fairly simple, I want to keep to the colour scheme that is included in the original book as seen the the examples below from the book.
